Seed Foundation South Africa

About Us

Seed Foundation South Africa, a registered non-profit organisation, has a rich history that dates back to 2004. Initially founded as Thusanang Community Based Organisation, the Foundation is committed to transforming lives by addressing systemic inequalities and fostering holistic growth, especially among children, youth, and families. Over the years, the organisation evolved and was later renamed Seed Foundation South Africa, with “SEED” being an acronym for Social development, Educational empowerment and Economic Development which are its three core focus areas.

Today, Seed Foundation South Africa aims to prevent and combat social ills such as substance abuse, crime, and gender-based violence through community development services. The organisation’s programmes focus on empowering communities through education, training, and workshops, targeting children, youth, families, and schools. They strive to provide mentorship, support, and skills development initiatives to strengthen communities and promote social justice.

As a grassroots organisation, they catalyse community mobilisation, neighbourhood enrichment, and collaborative strategy planning. The organisation’s end goal is to create an environment where gender equality, freedom, and social justice are a reality.

    Key Focus Area

SEED Foundation’s programmes are underpinned by the organisation’s six foundational pillars: Prevention, Early Intervention, Advocacy, Education, Mentorship, and Support.

    • GBVF Prevention & Support: Combat Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) through prevention, education, advocacy, and comprehensive support services.
    • Masibambisane Creating GBVF Free Zones: A sub-programme under GBVF, launched and successfully implemented through the support of the Foundation for Human Rights (FHR). It promotes free GBVF zones through education, survivor support, stakeholder mobilisation, and youth-led dialogue.
    • Family Care and Support Services: This programme strengthens families through parental skills training, early childhood development support, family mediation, counselling, and psychosocial services. Special focus is given to family reconstruction for at-risk youth and GBVF-affected households.
    • Cultural Revitalisation & Heritage Education: This programme preserves, documents, and revives intergenerational and indigenous knowledge systems, promoting social cohesion, national pride, and identity.
    • Economic Empowerment & Skills Development: This programme aims to build self-reliant youth and reduce poverty by enhancing access to economic opportunities.

    Impact and Achievements

    • YEEP (Young Entrepreneurship Empowerment Programme): Targets learners from Grade 7 to develop entrepreneurial thinking, business skills, and financial literacy through clubs, workshops, and mentorship.  YEEP builds a foundation for economic self-reliance, career exploration, and leadership in the social economy.
    • Vulamasango – Circle of Opportunities: A linkage initiative that connects unemployed youth with training, job opportunities, bursaries, learnerships, and entrepreneurship resources through partnerships with public and private entities. It ensures access to real-world opportunities and systemic support.
    • Leaders for Excellence, Action & Development (LEAD): LEAD is a youth-focused behavioural change and empowerment programme designed to nurture ethical, confident, and responsible leaders. LEAD develops emotional intelligence, discipline, and resilience in youth while providing them with tools to lead change within their communities and personal lives.
    • Ashes to Anthem: Voices from the Shadows (Educational Roadshow Project). A powerful arts-based programme using drama, poetry, and storytelling to uncover and address hidden social ills—such as abuse, discrimination, mental health struggles, and youth trauma—while promoting healing and awareness.
    • Intergenerational Heritage Education for Social Cohesion Project: Facilitates knowledge transfer, indigenous wisdom, and cultural identity restoration through dialogue, storytelling, and heritage events.
