FHR is an intermediary on-granter, direct implementer and fiscal host or secretariat for a number of civil society networks. We have 30 staff based in Johannesburg supporting activities in all 9 provinces.

In 2024-2025,  FHR is providing small-grants assistance of between ZAR 50,000 and ZAR 130,000 per annum to approximately 150 CSOs across all nine provinces of South Africa. This includes some of the most remote areas of the country. Of these, 24 CBOs are in the third year of their project grants through the GBV Masibambisane Programme; 19 CBOs are in the second year of their project grants through the Growing Food for Life Programme supporting greater food security and by reducing women’s economic dependence; and  100 CBOs will receive one-year core grants for advancing constitutional and human rights and improving access to justice in their community.

Between 2019 and 2024 the FHR has received approximately EUR 8,3 million for sub-granting, programme implementation and institution strengthening. This funding has supported over 1,000 projects through programming and small grants. From FHR’s founding in 1996 to 2008 funding came solely and directly from the European Union. Between 2009 and 2018 the EU funded FHR through Sector Budget Support via the Department of Justice & Constitutional Development (DOJ&CD). Approximately 1,200 projects were supported between 1996 and 2018.
