Sakhingomso Indwe Community Group
About Us
Sakhingomso Indwe Community Group is a community-based non-profit organisation dedicated to improving the lives of marginalised and vulnerable groups in Indwe and surrounding rural communities. Founded in 1998, they initially focused on tackling social disparities affecting people with disabilities, unemployment, and the development of underserved communities. In 2002, they were officially registered as a non-profit organisation, formalizing their commitment to creating positive social change.
Their services cater to the most vulnerable members of society, including children, individuals living with HIV and AIDS, and victims of gender-based violence (GBV). They provide home-based care services, ensuring that children take their medication correctly and offering additional support for educational needs through after-care programmes. They also run support groups, distribute food parcels, and offer psycho-social and nutritional support.
In 2020, the organisation launched a Mentorship Hub to provide training and support for victims of violence, a critical initiative aimed at curbing the impact of abuse in serving communities. The organisation’s programmes are designed to foster social change by raising awareness about health, human rights, and gender equality.
Their dedicated team includes seven caregivers, an admin officer, two outreach officers, and a Programmeme Manager. Together, they work tirelessly to offer educational support, HIV and AIDS care, nutritional support, and psycho-social services, all while striving to empower communities to break free from the cycles of poverty, abuse, and neglect.
Key Focus Area
Sakhingomso’s programmeme aims to address three interconnected issues: violence, substance use, and sex education & early pregnancy. Through engaging activities, they educate and empower young people to make informed choices and understand their rights and responsibilities.
Violence: This section focuses on power, privilege, and access to rights, exploring how these factors contribute to bullying and HIV/AIDS. They aim to help participants recognize their own relative power or powerlessness, and to understand how they can make decisions that prevent violence and inequality.
Key Objective: Empower boys and girls to actively challenge power imbalances and reduce bullying and its related consequences.
Substance Use: This section introduces the concept of substance use and highlights its impact on children. They focus on promoting abstinence as an alternative to drug use and explore the values, beliefs, and behaviors that influence personal choices.
Key Objective: Enable participants to understand the risks of substance use and develop healthier coping strategies.
Sex Education & Early Pregnancy: This section educates participants on the dangers of underage sexual activity and emphasizes the importance of sexual consent. They challenge misconceptions around consent and stress that “no” always means “no.”
Key Objective: Equip boys and girls with knowledge about consent, sexual rights, and the legal consequences of rape.
These activities are designed to encourage active participation and reflection, leading to better understanding and decision-making regarding these crucial life issues.
Impact and Achievements
Sakhingomso is proud to share the significant strides made through the collaboration with FHR in replicating the Gender Justice and Human Rights Clubs. One of their key achievements is the recent opportunity to travel to Germany with two learners from their clubs network. This experience allowed them to engage deeply with global human rights initiatives, particularly those focused on achieving gender equality (SDG 5). The trip provided valuable insights and resources, which they have already started integrating into the project to further empower young people and help them become active, engaged citizens.
Through this collaboration, they have successfully enriched their approach to gender justice, expanded the learners’ perspectives, and strengthened their commitment to promoting human rights and gender equality within the communities they serve. These ongoing exchanges continue to impact the learners’ understanding of gender justice and inspire them to contribute positively to their communities.
