Hope for Africa Foundation
About Us
Hope for Africa Foundation was founded in 2016 as a non-profit company, with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC) and later with the Department of Social Development in 2022. Its primary objective is to safeguard children’s well-being by fostering collaborative relationships among children, parents, community members, local organisations, schools, governments, and other stakeholders. The foundation strives to enhance children’s lives, from infancy to young adulthood, by raising awareness on issues such as access to better nutrition, healthcare, safety, education, and skills development, empowering them to reach their full potential and contribute positively to their communities.
Key Focus Area
- Promoting Social Justice: they advocate for equal access to social justice and human rights.
- Combating Gender-Based Violence: The programmes aim to track down perpetrators and provide support to victims. They also work with schools using one of the FHR initiated Human Rights School Clubs to create a safer environment.
- Empowering Youth: They provide donations, such as school shoes, and establish Human Rights School Clubs to educate and empower young minds.
- Poverty Alleviation: The skills development programme helps young people escape poverty. The organisation’s new initiative, Hope for Girls Network, will comprise 30% young boys and 70% young girls.
- Walk for Change: Every year, they participate in a 16-day activism event, walking from Katlehong to Durban to show solidarity and fight against human rights violations affecting children and women.
Impact and Achievements
Since its inception in 2016, Hope for Africa Foundation has been dedicated to creating a safer, more equitable society for children and women in Katlehong where most of their programmemes are being implemented. Their tireless efforts have yielded remarkable achievements, transforming countless lives in the process:
- Successfully implemented GBV programmes, supporting a significant number of survivors and tracing perpetrators to ensure justice is served in collaboration with SAPS and other key structures such as community police forum.
- Established Human Rights School Clubs in 2x schools (both primary and secondary), empowering over 200 learners with knowledge and skills to promote social justice by themselves in school with minimal support from the organisation.
- Provided essential resources, including school shoes, to over 12 575 underprivileged students, promoting education and dignity.
- Trained over 100 young people in skills development programmes, equipping them to break the cycle of poverty.
- Organized annual “Walk for Change” events, mobilising thousands to take a stand against human rights violations and GBV.
- Hope for Africa Foundation has received notable recognition for its outstanding work, including being awarded the “Best Community Developer Of The Year” in 2021 by Vow FM.
- Lastly, the organisation was honored as the 3rd Runner Up for “Best Social Impact Organisation” at the Premier Service Excellence Awards in 2018.
