Love that fights hate

Project Story

GAY AND LESBIAN NETWORK

The Gay and Lesbian Network (GLN) is a non-profit organisation that responds to the psycho-social needs of the LBGTI community and works towards its development. GLN was established in response to a needs survey of the LGBTI community in Pietermaritzburg in the larger area of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. Its three programmes are safe spaces, health and the creation of an enabling environment for this community.

GAY AND LESBIAN NETWORK PROJECT – TACKLING HATE CRIMES, MARCH 2011

The GLN’s project tackled hate crimes against the LGBTI community. The network created a Pietermaritzburg-based Hate Crime Task Team of which it is the Secretariat. It comprises representatives from NGOs and government organisations and works closely with the National Hate Crimes Team. The GLN conducted workshops on personal development, self-esteem and self-defense as well as workshops for heterosexuals. These analysed values and attitudes to sexuality and human rights in relation to diversity and discrimination. The GLN also conducted research in schools, recording the results in a report.
