The Foundation for Human Rights (the FHR) is a partner of the Department of Justice on the National Task Team to address gender and sexual-orientation-based violence against LGBTI persons (NTT). In addition to implementation work related to the NTT, the FHR also undertakes and funds other rights-promoting work in the LGBTI sector.
The FHR is looking for a coordinator for its work on LGBTI issues and rights. This is a contract fixed term position and requires a thorough knowledge of LGBTI rights and experience in the LGBTI non-profit sector in South Africa.
The responsibilities of this position will include:
- Manage and coordinate the LGBTI rights work within the FHR
- Work closely with the Department of Justice on the implementation of the National Intervention Strategy (NIS) developed by the NTT
- Oversee and shape all events, trainings and special programmes of the FHR concerning LGBTI rights
- Oversee and provide expert input into proposals related to LGBTI rights
- Write reports on specific projects or areas of work
- Conduct provincial site visits
- Prepare Terms of Reference for specific aspects of work outlined in the NIS and oversee timely delivery of appropriate deliverables.
- In collaboration with the Grants Unit, prepare contracts for grantees and service providers.
- Manage and supervise work commissioned through the NIS
- Advise the Executive Director of the FHR and the Management Committee (MANCOM) about developments that may impact the proper functioning of LGBTI-related work
- Make regular reports to MANCOM about LGBTI-related work
- Implement any other tasks assigned by the Programme Managers or Executive Director of the FHR
Minimum and desired qualifications for this position include:
- An undergraduate or higher degree in Social Sciences or Law
- A minimum of five years of experience in the LGBTI or women’s rights sector in South Africa as researcher, project coordinator, advocate or similar position
- Deep and demonstrable understanding of the LGBTI rights landscape in South Africa and, to some extent, regionally and globally, including the intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality and other vectors of historical and ongoing oppression in the global South
- Demonstrable ability to work with government departments as well as grassroots civil society organizations
- Must be a good team player and also have the ability to work independently
- Demonstrable ability to conceptualise and oversee long-term advocacy and/or education projects, preferably with project management experience
- Fluency in English and, preferably, at least one other South African language
- Strong writing skills in English
- A strong commitment to the principles and practice of human rights and feminism
