The right to special protection in situations of exploitation

CHILD ABUSE IN BRIEF
In South Africa, an estimated one in three children live with both biological parents. Some 1.9 million children have lost one or both parents due to AIDS. Poor children appear to be more likely to be deprived of parental care. Although the Constitution stresses the right of every child to be protected from maltreatment, neglect, abuse or degradation, 2 more than 56 000 children were reported to be victims of violent crime in 2009/2010 although many more crimes remain unreported. Also, research shows that sexual offences are often committed against young children and that 29 percent of all sexual offences against children involve children under the age of 10 years old.
